Practice your English with Speech Recognition

If you're experiencing some issues with your speaking exercises in the courseware, please follow the steps below to solve them.

  1. Make sure your microphone is enabled
When you start a speaking exercise, the system will check if you have allowed the use of your microphone.
When prompted in the pop up, please click Allow on the message 'englishlive.ef.com wants to use your microphone'.
If the pop up does not appear, please click on the search bar to display it and then click Allow.

  2. Make sure you record and listen to yourself
Once you've granted access to the microphone, you will test your audio set up.
Click on the microphone button to record your voice. This test will last a few seconds. Then you can listen to what you just recorded to see if it worked.
The system will then ask if you could hear yourself, if not, click on 'no' and follow the instructions to find the issue.

  3. My microphone and speakers are working but the speech recognition is not working well and not recognising what I say
Make sure you do your speech exercises in a quiet environment. High levels of background noise can interfere and make it more difficult for the system to understand you. Don't hesitate to use headphones and speak closer to your microphone to eliminate some of the background noise.
